Therapeutic support

Learn about therapeutic support for foster carers who care for children and young people with challenging behaviours.

Suffolk’s Therapeutic Fostering Team provides therapeutic support for foster carers who are caring for children and young people who have complex needs resulting from the trauma they have experienced.

How we can help you and your foster child

We offer foster carers a range of training sessions, individual therapeutic consultations to carers and their social workers, coaching sessions with the child or a range of all or some of the above to support the carer(s) and child(ren). We also work closely with Connect Service (a specialist mental health service for children in care and adopted children).

We hope that this understanding therefore encourages the carers to become more attuned to the child/young person in their care, helping them to identify which approaches and strategies may help their child and increase their emotional flexibility in order to achieve this.

The team has their own clinical psychologists, systemically informed practitioners and group facilitators working with the carers as well as coaches working with the children and young people directly.

Suffolk’s Therapeutic Fostering Team provides appropriate support to minimise the risk of things breaking down. This support gives carers confidence and skills in caring for the children they foster.

A key aspect of therapeutic fostering is to understand the impact of past experiences on the child or young person’s behaviour, relationships and their view of the world.
